RiverCross Global: Trauma Healing for Children in Sub-Saharan Africa

RiverCross Global is a U.S.-based nonprofit that has developed a research-baed trauma-healing program for children in Sub-Saharan Africa. At the center of their approach are beautifully written and produced audio dramas that give children a safe entry point to discuss difficult experiences - such as conflict and displacement - with caregivers and peers. Their mission is to restore hope and resilience for children who have endured trauma.

1. The Challenge

As RiverCross expanded across Southern Africa using a train-the-trainer model, they needed a way to keep track of how their program was spreading, whether trainers were supported, and how children and caregivers were engaging with the audio dramas. Traditional reporting methods made it difficult for the U.S.-based team to stay connected to what was happening on the ground.

2. The Solution

RiverCross adopted Simba’s WhatsApp-enabled platform to connect with trainers, track program use, and gather field-level insights. They now use Simba surveys before and after their annual summit, to support trainer development, and to collect feedback directly from caregivers implementing the program. They also created RCTalk, a dedicated channel where trainers and caregivers can submit stories of impact in real time.

3. The Outcome

With Simba, RiverCross has a simple way to monitor how their model spreads across the region and to measure its impact on children’s lives. They now have visibility into trainer activity, the number of children reached, and the stories emerging from the field. This ongoing feedback loop allows them to adjust training, capture the program’s influence, and strengthen their vision of expanding trauma healing for children across Africa with hopes of expanding beyond.

RiverCross Global uses Simba’s WhatsApp platform to communicate with trainers, capture stories, and measure the spread of their trauma-healing audio program for children in Africa.
